In some cases, the landlord will allow the letters to be ”direct” or ”flush” mounted to the building. This involves drilling roughly three holes for every letter and pushing the wires through the facade to where they are fashioned together and connected to the power supply inside the building. This is referred to as a ”remote” installation. Some landlords frown on this installation as it requires a significant repair when a tenant vacates.
Another popular channel letter style is the “Reverse” channel letter. Instead of light streaming out the front of the letter, a reverse channel letter has the light coming out the back of the letter, which stands off the wall about 2”. This creates the “halo” or “glow” effect.
